This report, labelled as Staff Paper ORO-SP-53, describes in detail one of the earliest computer games, a wargame called HUTSPIEL created in 1955 at the Operations Research Office (ORO, later the Research Analysis Corporation) at Johns Hopkins University, in association with the US Army. The game was created for the GEDA (Goodyear Electronic Differential Analyzer) computer, and let two players control opposing sides in an imagined USSR/NATO battle. This game is an ancestor to the better-known later early computer game THEATERSPIEL (1962).
The document uploaded here is a recent scan from one of the few remaining copies of the original report held at the US Army War College, and has not been previously available online.
